WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GO VIRAL

​2021 was a really fun year at #glowgetternation. Both Christina and I had reels that hit 7 million and 1 million views respectively. Christina actually had multiple reels go viral and what was interesting about this was every video we had that went viral was very unique and at least 2 of them we considered to be our worst pieces of content.

I had always been scared to go viral, In my mind, every bully I’d ever had throughout my life would find my content and bully me more, or people would criticize me for being ‘instafamous’, I’m happy to report that while I faced a lot of criticism from Trolls, really nothing to wild happened except I gained a really great following of people to connect with!
As views started to climb we had to figure out what viral meant. We figured hitting 10K was a good benchmark for virality since there appear to be differing views on this; once 10K people see something it’s spread to a small city so I mean, that’s solid. This number is up for debate but it’s the benchmark we continue to use.

My viral video was literally me pouring International Delight Creamer into Coke Zero. My face was nowhere to be found, my products were nowhere to be found, it was just a really weird food combination I used to replace ice cream floats when I was lactose intolerant. You can see it here, the worst piece of content I’ve made. 1.2 million people saw it, hundreds shared it and thousands of people liked it. I’d say most of the comments were negative but they were all stupid things like “YoU dIdNt InVeNt ThIs” or ‘WoWwWwW DiAbEtEs”. People looooove to bring down other people and being openly roasted on the internet was far less damaging than I thought it would be. (We will talk about how to handle the assholes in a separate post.) A lot of people tagged their friends, eager to try it at their next get-together!

Having a video go viral wasn’t as scary as I had imagined and here are the great things that happened because I had a viral video:

1. More followers for our community
   
2. Bigger reach to audiences who may not have seen us otherwise
   
3. Confidence Boost
   
4. Proof that we can do it and so can anyone else
   
5. More sales of our products/services from audience reach
   
6. Fun new drink suggestions from the fun comments

While I wouldn’t say everyone needs to set the goal of having their content go viral, it is a fantastic way to reach a larger audience. My best tips for creating viral content:

1. JUST POST. It doesn’t need to be perfect
   
2. Things you think are mundane won’t be to everyone, POST IT
   
3. Share your content on multiple platforms - mine goes nowhere on tiktok but finds traction on Facebook and Instagram
   
4. Know your niche and make content for them
   
5. Just have fun!
