At Glowgetternation we like to think of customizable makeup palettes as the beauty world’s equivalent to Subway: You literally have it your way, but you have to know what tastes good together.
Younique has started offering us the option to choose from 25 different shades to create a quad (4) palette, of custom colours.
This new DIY option can be both AMAZING and a PAIN IN THE ASS, with so many options to choose from, it can be quite frustrating to know which to choose and which to leave behind. As the Glowgetternation Resident Makeup Artist, I felt I would be doing the fam a huge disservice if I didn’t show you how to build these palettes with ease. Here are my guidelines for how to select the right shades for your skin tone and lifestyle.
Rock me Mama like the Colour Wheel
When we shop for makeup, we are creatures of habit. We tend to stick with what we know and quite often this means ending up with 5 or 6 very similar palettes, all used to create almost identical looks. It’s time to skip signature hues and shades. Go with shades that will complement your skin tones. If you look better in gold jewelry look for warmer tones, like Gingerly and Fanatical. If you look better in silver jewelry you’ll want cool tones like Crafty and Cynical. If you’re feeling brave, think back to the grade 5 art class where your teacher brought out the colour wheel and taught you about complimentary colours! Use this trick to make those eye tones really pop! Blue eyed beauties? Try using Gingerly and Optimistic, our brown eyed beauties can get away with pretty much anything. Try Credulous! The world is your oyster when it comes to creating head turning looks using Moodstruck Pressed Eye Palettes.
Be a Chameleon
I highly suggest you choose colours that will blend well together or stand out on their own. Try to choose a range of light and dark shades, with only 4 to fill your palette this can be difficult, but opt for 2 lighter and 2 darker shades. You are always able to layer or blend colours slightly to change up the look.
Never underestimate the power of an Eyebrow
I’m a huge fan of using eyeshadow on your eyebrows, especially on vacation. If I’m limited in space, I’m taking along that palette that is giving me the most bang for my back. I often suggest to clients that when customizing a palette you make one of your dark shades a colour that matches your eyebrows. Brows, smokey eyes, no one will know you’ve used one shade for both.
MIX IT UP
Matte? Shimmer? Metallic? Or Satin? Why not one of each? You’ll notice your current palettes probably have a variety of finishes. Combining textures can be just as pleasing to the eye as complimenting colour schemes.
We have a ton of super creative people at #glowgetternation so I asked them, what’s in your palette:
Jade (hazel eyed beauty): Marvelous (matte brown), Timid (matte peachy nude), Inconceivable (shimmer emerald), Crafty (satin periwinkle purple)
Christina (green/blue eyed beauty): Fervent (matte burgundy), Antsy (metallic champagne), Agile (satin mauve-maroon), Hesitant (Matte dusty rose)
Theme your palette for fall with a 'Pumpkin Spice' Palette: Gingerly (matte caramel), Fanatical (metallic vintage gold), Gullible (matte espresso), Nimble (nut brown satin)
Try a 'Rose Gold' palette for wedding season: Manipulative (metallic copper), Nimble (nut brown satin), Slick (rose shimmer), Optimistic (metallic ivory)
With 25 colors to choose from, it might be hard to put together just one palette.
